In 1879 Jozef Alsberghe and August Van Oost founded Alsberghe & Van Oost ,a textile bleaching factory, in Drongen, along the Drongensesteenweg. Almost 100 years later, in 1978, they went bankrupt and the buildings were sold to Sobelta. In 1990 Alsberghe & Van oost was rented by Artifex, they erected some new buildings and used the place as warehouse for a while (it was abandoned again a few years later). In 2003, the proposition to use the Alsberghe and Van Oost domain for a social housing project (300 - 320 houses + officebuildings and shops) was accepted. Demolishing of the buildings to make place for social housing should have started late 2004, but not much has happened yet. In 1981 some of the buildings got protected by law as monuments (mainly the boilers and the engineroom(which were built in 1913)), Sobelta ignored this and in 1986 they ordered to demolish the boilers, but they were caught and had to pay a fine. In december 2004, a large part of (what remained of) the steamengine was stolen, everything that could be taken, has been taken away. That's why there's hardly anything left of the boilers and the engineroom; vandals, thiefs and harsh weather..
