 Overview
 Description
A decaying, abandoned building in the middle of a field. Not large, only three stories tall, but because the ground is so flat and it's set away from the surrounding structures, it seems much more impressive.

Best to go at night. The site along the river takes on an eerie quality that adds to the experience. Also, numerous outbuildings and an abandoned house that are very interesting as well.

     History
The Lakin Industrial School for Colored Boys opened in 1924 (the main building) and had several additions through the years. When the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was illegal, the boys were transfered to the Industrial School at Pruntytown.

Please keep in mind that "Industrial School" was a nice name for a juvenile prison.

     Future Plans
Apparently the state is considering turning this over to the county or to a land reuse agency. Odds are high that the building will be demolished sometime in the future.

Update (11/25/06): Gone. AEP has apparently purchased the site and is clearing the land for future development. At least 1/3 of the building was demolished as of 11/24, with more to go soon.
