Three connected brick and concrete buildings; a gym, a two story school building and a one story wing for a total of about 22000 square feet on about 2.5 acres. The two story section was the original old Kleberg elementary school, the one story wing and gymnasium were added sometime later. The interior has been vandalized severely and there is evidence of multiple vagrant habitations. There are asbestos warnings posted on exterior doors. This building would be worth preserving with a little effort.

The town of Kleberg Texas was founded in 1882, at least thats when they got their first post office. Before that it was just an informal community that sprang up around the intersection of two stage coach roads in 1850. In 1905 the Federal Government awarded a $2 million grant to the town of Kleberg to build a navigation lock (Lock #2) on the Trinity River but in 1908 a massive flood wiped that project out and left much of this low lying area underwater. There was a wood frame schoolhouse here but it burned down after the flood. In 1913 Kleberg built this two story brick schoolhouse to replace it. Kleberg was eventually annexed by the city of Dallas in 1978 then it was cut in half by the new Interstate 20 but this little red brick schoolhouse continued to serve the community until it closed in 1984. A popular local urban legend says that a murder or suicide took place in here. Even the members of the Iglesia de Cristo church next door said there was un homicidio here. I could find no other information to support that but the story still circulates that this had something to do with the school being closed. UPDATE Sep 14 2007: sadly, this historic old schoolhouse burned down in the pre-dawn hours today, it is a total loss and will be completely demolished see gallery and link to news media web story.
