An entire city that was reliant on one employer. All other mines were gone and Eldorado was the last large mine left. They announced in 1982 that they were to close the mine. The city went from over 5,000 to just a couple hundred within a few years. Otherwise it has what you would expect any city that size to have. Schools, Commercial Districts, block after block of abandoned houses. Due to the remoteness of Uranium City many people didn't take most of their stuff with them. You can still find 1960's cars still parked in the garages of several homes. You can see homes that were under construction and just abandoned. Many of the homes were later found to have been built on Uranium tailings and are not fit for human habitation.

It's an abandoned city with 45 abandoned mines in the area. Street after street of abandoned homes and businesses. One mine in particular, Gunnar Mine has been declared the second greatest environmental disaster area in Canada. Gunnar has radiation levels that are 208 times the maximum allowable exposer. I haven't been there myself, but I posted this location to make it's existence aware to the UE community. I am posting this as well to be a challenge to any explorer who wants to see something that most explorers wouldn't have the time of money to commit to a visit to this former city.

Uranium City boomed in the 1950's when the American Government offered to buy all the uranium that the mines could produce. The majority of the uranium used for power generation and for building nuclear weapons from 1950 till 1980 was produced here. Uranium Cities population which once peaked at over 5,000 is now less than 150 people.

CBC has done a few reports on it.

The cost of cleaning this area up is staggering. Part of the problem lies in the logistics of getting a clean up crew up there, supporting them for several years, and getting everything out. The cost is so high that I doubt anything will happen. It is currently a case of "Out of sight, out of mind". The town will probably further decline. If you are looking for a $100 house, this is the place to look.
