     History
The quotation on the cornice work above the entrance says: "All True Work Is Sacred". This was a 1930 orphanage and home for the aged. It looks a little out of place sitting on a north Texas hillside. Today this attractive work of the builder's art has become an attractive nuisance as it might be described in legal parlance. Vandals, ghost hunters, thieves and others have ripped out most of the walls, stolen most of the hardware and woodwork, defiled most of the interior surfaces and tried to set it on fire with varying degrees of success making ruin of the builders sacred work. Even the beautiful marble fountain out front could not escape the wrath of the morons.

This home was built by the Woodmens Circle, a fraternal organization founded in 1890 to provide life insurance at a time when many people were distrustful of banks and insurance companies. In addition to paying benefits to its members it hosted social activities, assisted the Red Cross with relief efforts and participated in community service projects. The organization spread and soon chapters known as "Groves" were operating in several states. In 1965 they were incorporated into the mens only organization Woodmen of the World.

In 1970 the home was closed when it could not meet state requirements for care facilities. In 1972 a religious cult moved in under the leadership of a shadowy character from Tennessee who called himself a minister by the name of Aryal Sherman. The home fell into ruin soon after and has been abandoned since 1976.

Today the buildings stand in an advanced state of deterioration and remain the subject of numerous ghost stories and urban web-myths that will almost certainly contribute to further vandalism and destruction.

There is apparently more historical information about the home in the Sherman public library but they refuse to let anyone to see it because that too has been vandalized. The property does not appear in the Grayson County tax database and local residents seem reluctant to discuss the home at all. I have not been able to find out who the current legal owner is but have been told it is owned by an attorney who plans to develop the property i.e. bulldoze it and build new homes.

This property is posted and being watched closely due to frequent visitations by paranormals, looters and vandals. In 2004 some ghost hunters claim they were shot at while entering this property.

UPDATE: I found reference to Ariel/Aryal Sherman on a forum for screwed up members of religious cults. Apparently this guy moved the cult from state to state to avoid paying their debts. He made his followers work at a car wash he ran in Sherman to support the home. In 2002 Ariel Ben Sherman aka Warren Sherman was arrested for child abuse and sentenced to 10 years probation. He was 75 years old. There are still members of his former cult living in the area.

The old place caught fire. See weblinks for details.

     Future Plans
One rumor is it will be bulldozed, the two main buildings seem to be structurally viable but the interiors cannot be restored at this point.
