A comparitively small petroleum refinery on the outskirts of a small Texas town. Dozens of buildings, a complete nearly intact refinery apparatus and a dozen or so storage tanks situated on an active rail line. And it is next door to an active petroleum terminal on one side, an active residential neighborhood on another.

This small independant refinery produced gasoline, diesel and asphalt from 1936 until 1984 when it closed. It was sold in 2000 but then closed when environmental issues were reported. The new owner promptly filed for bankruptcy then apparently abandoned the property. Probably due to residual environmental issues and the threat of continued liability. The property is now idle and deteriorating. Asbestos insulated pipes are shedding fibers every time the wind blows. Public hearings are being held to determine just how much taxpayers will have to spend to clean it up. See partial list of hazards. Asbestos didnt even make the states lengthy list of recognized contaminants at this site. UPDATE: NOV 2008 location is now occupied and active parking lot is full and several uniformed security were observed at the gate. It may just be a clean up operation its doubtful any gasoline is being cooked here. UPDATE: Well, its gone. See demolition video under web links.
