     History
The area now known as Bachelors Grove was settled in the 1820's. At the time, the site was distant from Chicago. There are 2 theories as to how the area got it's name. The first is a family name, 'batchelder'. The family was honoured when the local post office was names after them. The second theory centers around 4 bachelors who came into the area and were particularily notorious. Either way, the area was a prosperous community for 150 years before it was eventually turned into a forest preserve.

The first person to be buried in Bachelors Grove (origonally Everdon's) was Eliza Scott, who was buried in November of 1844. The cemetary was situated next to a quarry pond, and was a favorite spot for picnicers and family reunions. The cemetary was comprised of 82 plots on a one acre parcel of land.

During Chicago's prohibition days, it is said that the quarry pond was a popular 'dump spot' for the mafia, and Capone's gang. During the 1950's, stories began to circulate about a disappearing house, murders, and satanic practices. The area began to go downhill, with more and more of the area being turned into forest preserve.

Vandalism, grave robbing and parties came to their peak in the 1970's. Many of the grave markers were upended, and some were removed completly, later showing up in local police precints. Other disappered, believed to be at the bottom of the pond. 7 teenagers were arrested in 1973 for digging up one of the graves on the site. During this time, family members of those inturned at Bachelors Grove had thier relatives relocated to 'quieter' cemetaries. There was still the occasional burial, and the last on record was in 1989, when the ashes of Robert Shields were interned.

There are rumours that the quarry pond is still an active as a burial ground. In the summer of 1989, a murdered body was found dumped in the cemetary. (Shock! a dead body in a cemetary!) Since then, the area has been popular with ghost hunters, and local teens who come out drinking and trying to scare themselves. Other than the kids and hunters, the site has seen no maintenance. No one has looked after the area, and it has been forsaken, wiped of all maps.

The most interesting part of Bachelors Grove are the stories of haunting, supernatural and the strange feelings that one gets upon entering the confines of the burial ground. Rumoured stories and second hand tales speak of sacrifices, a woman in white, and mafia dead. The stories are plentiful, the aura is charged with fear. Go, see what remains. If you are strong enough. But before you go, make sure to read the tales.

     Future Plans
The cemetary has been left to rot. No plans to move or redevelope the area, although punks and satanists seem to hang out here all the time.
