     History
Regent Park is one of the oldest social housing communities in Canada. Its construction began in 1948. It was intended to replace the squalor of the neighbourhood with a modern, spacious and pleasant environment inspired by Ebenezer Howard's Garden City movement from the United Kingdom.

The oldest part of Regent Park, located north of Dundas Street, is made up of walk-up apartments and row houses. The units had modern plumbing and appliances and were an instant success with the residents who moved in. The south portion of the site was completed in 1959, comprised of some innovative two-storey units in high-rise apartment buildings, and two-and-three-storey townhouses.

There are more than 2,000 units of rent-geared-to-income housing spread over 69 acres bordered by Shuter, River, Gerrard and Parliament Streets. It is home to close to 7,500 tenants.

2005 marked the beginning of a ten year redevelopment project, that will see the neighbourhood's sbuildings replaced with modern housing and improved neighbourhood amenities, with a mix of market rate condominiums and social housing. The traditional street grid will be also be restored.

     Future Plans
The revitalization of Regent Park represents a landmark opportunity for urban renewal in the core of Canada’s largest city. Toronto Community Housing is embarking on a two stage process, with the objective of attracting one of the nation’s best development teams to act as Toronto Community Housing’s partner and “master builder” for a portion of Phase I of this exciting and challenging project.

The first stage is this Request for Qualifications, whereby developers are now being invited to provide submissions detailing their capabilities and experience in connection with the development of the project. Based on these submissions, Toronto Community Housing will create a short list of pre-qualified developers who may be invited to participate in stage two of the process, the Request for Proposals.
