The Scary Apartments. That is what people that live in the neighborhood have called this place for many years. And while I will agree that some of the residents are kinda scary, most of them are just low or no income people many are disabled or elderly. Recently the property management announced it would not be renewing any leases and residents were told to start looking for another place to live. Contrary to popular belief this is not a "housing project". It does however include some Section 8 government assisted housing as its now called. Out of 472 units 288 are set aside for some form of federal money through HUD DHA and other agencies. Derelict vehicles with flat tires, expired tags and broken out windows litter the parking lots. 100s of stray cats live under these buildings and there have been colonies of feral cats living here for as long as I can remember. These animals are truly wild and have never been owned or cared for by humans. At least 50 of them were rescued and relocated by animal lovers before they were threatened with arrest if they trapped any more stray cats. Illegal aliens have also found sanctuary here in the form of several safe house apartments. A 900 square foot unit can easily support 10 or 12 illegal immigrants. The slum lords dont seem to worry about these undocumented tenants as long as the rent money and federal vouchers keep coming in. As noted the plan calls for all leases to be allowed to expire and its been suggested that demolition will not start until sometime in October 2006. An increasing number of units will become vacated each month and a half-assed effort at boarding up the vacant ones is underway now. It may present some interesting opportunities for explorers but there is also gang activity and should be considered a hazardous location. The NWTs (for North West Terrace) are a local gang or at least gangsta wannabes. Probably best to just avoid them in either case. December 2006 update: status changed to closed. All tenants have left, all units boarded up. Still an occasional security patrol and electrical power including street lights has been cut off. May 2007 update: the apartment complex still stands. It was supposed to have been demolished already but No Trespassing notices have been taped to all doors and purple paint stripes have been applied to the beaver-wood boarding. One unarmed security guard is usually present after dark. Accessibility changed to difficult in consideration of the boarding and the night guard September 2007 update: The City has placed signs on part of this property to notify the public of proposed rezoning. I dont think these are ever disapproved when a corporation or developer asks for zoning changes. February 2008 update: a rent-a-fence has gone up, asbestos abatement and interior tear-out has begun. April 2008 update: full demolition in progress half the west complex is leveled.

Trendy and upscale zero lot line townhomes. UPDATE Sep 2007: proposed rezoning would allow about half this property to become a nursing / retirement type facility
