Bring a buddy...especially if your a woman as there have been rapes in Franklin Park and the ruins are set back from the open area's of Franklin Park where people go to run and walk dogs. Generally its fine.

The Bear Dens are located in the Long Crouch Woods at the northern corner of Franklin Park, near the Seaver Street entrance. The area was designed by Arthur Shurtlecliff, and was once a focus of the Franklin Park Zoo when the zoo had no fences and was open to all. However, in 2002 only ruins remain. Much of the iron caging is still intact. A stone sculpture of the bears with the crest of the City of Boston is deteriorating and now defamed by grafitti, but is still an important element of the park that is valued by many park users. Stairs lead to a once grand but now forlorn courtyard that is framed by old cages. The Bear Dens area attracts dumping and illicit activity. The area has been targeted as in decline and in need of management for decades. A director of the Franklin Park Coalition has taken multiple park commissioners on tours to see the conditions of the Bear Dens over the past three decades. The 1980 Revised General Plan of Franklin Park recommends making this area into a center for nature study with a snack bar and theatre facility. However in 2002, the deterioration of the Bear Dens continues. In 2002, members and friends of the Franklin Park Coaliton cleared the area of trash. In the original plan for Franklin Park, Long Crouch Woods was to have a small collection of domestic animals. This plan was never realized. The Bear Dens were designed in 1912. As the zoo deteriorated it became too expensive to manage the entire swath of land dedicated to the zoo and the Bear Dens were lobbed off the zoo property and left to deteriorate.

Bear Cages were used in the movie Mystic River as the location where the daughters body was found.
