     History
The Canadian Northern Railway was borne out of a network of branch lines in the prairies in 1895. The line's owners were slowly inching their way eastward towards Ontario when they decided to purchase other smaller railways and string together a national system. One of these properties was the Great Northern Railway in Quebec. With a terminus at Grenville Quebec, it would form part of a line to Ottawa and beyond to Toronto by 1912. Other lines between Ottawa and Toronto were also purchased as feeder routes to the new main line. In 1909 the Ottawa-Montreal line was opened, with the Ottawa-Toronto stretch opening in late 1912. In 1916 the Ottawa-Sudbury line was also opened, but only a year later the railway went bankrupt.

The federal government took over the CNoR to form Canadian National Railways (CNR). In 1919 another major railway, the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) also went bankrupt and was absorbed into the CNR. Suddenly the lines of two competing railways were in the hands of one owner. Inferior routes were abandoned, including the Napanee-Toronto section of the CNoR, and later the Ottawa-Hawkesbury section in 1939. With virtually no online traffic after the closure of the Edwards Mill in Rockland in 1936, CN was allowed to abandon the line in 1939. Numerous structures still survive.

    Green's Creek Trestle:

The trestle was built in 1909 across Green's Creek in the former township of Gloucester along the Canadian Northern Railway's Ottawa-Montreal mainline. The bridge was a steel structure with several plate deck girder spans. The first picture in Abacab's gallery will show you an old air photo of the bridge from 1930.

Originally the approaches to the bridge were on wooden trestles which were filled in 1921. By 1931 passenger traffic on the line died off with only a daily mixed train remaining. In 1936 the mills in Rockland closed, killing the majority of the line's shipments. In 1939 CN got permission to abandon the line. Shortly thereafter the bridge was dismantled.

Today the concrete footings remain. The abutments at either end are crumbling, but still in good shape. On top of the footings you can still see the bolts and square outline of the steel anchor plates.

Leonard Creek (Orleans), Nelson Edwards Creek (Wendover):

These 2 concrete box culverts replaced older wooden trestles in 1918/1919. Leonard Creek is 1km east of Trim Road on the south side of Highway 174. Nelson Edwards Creek is located a few hundred metres west of Rollin Road along Old Highway 17. Both are worth a visit if you are following the line.

    South Nation River Bridge Piers:

These are the second set of piers to be erected. In 1908 the identical original piers were loacted 30' futher east. Due to poor concrete, one pier toppled over and some of the others were leaning visibly. They were subsequently torn down before the steel deck was placed and rebuilt 30' away. This delayed the opening of the line to December 1909.

     Future Plans
Areas in Ottawa are owned by Ontario Hydro and remain protected. East of Cumberland the line belongs to many private owners who have been destroying it's remains for many years and will probably continue to do so.
