A WWII era Army facility consisting of a large two story wood frame structure of approximately 8000 square feet and about an acre of land with some small out buildings. Surrounded by a 6 ft chain link fence topped with 3 strands of barbed wire, this lovely property features a detached deuce & a half size garage and spacious outdoor deck area for entertaining. It was really not in bad condition considering the lack of maintenance, over the last 60-70 years.

In 1940 the U.S. War Department acquired 123,000 acres here to build a camp for armor and infantry training. This became the largest military training camp in the U.S. and over a quarter of a million soldiers were processed through Camp Bowie until it was closed down and declared surplus in 1946. Not to be confused with two other Camp Bowies named for Texas hero Col. James Bowie. The first Camp Bowie was built in 1837 near Ft. Worth by the Republic of Texas Army, the second Camp Bowie was built in 1917 also in Ft Worth for WWI. Best I can determine, this was the headquarters or administration building for the 3rd Battalion, 112th Armored Divsion. The building itself looks somewhat like a very large residential or apartment building but when I spotted it I knew immediately it was pure G.I. This property was deeded to Brown County in 1949. Now its overgrown by weeds, brush and lots of cactus. Some junk is being stored here by the county and it may have been used recently for military or police training. Theres not much left of Camp Bowie anymore most of the 5000 acre camp itself has been built over and covered up by warehouses, factories, parks and a hospital. But every now and then a small corner of these historic old military sites escapes the bulldozer's blade. UPDATE: satellite images indicate this one is gone.
