     History
The cinnabar ore deposits that make up this mining area were first discovered in 1913 by two prospectors named Thomas Pepper and Charles Keough. Development at the two original properties, the Mina and Lost Steer mines, did not begin until 1916, under the direction of the Mina Development Company, who likely put up the large mill, and production continued periodically at these properties up to and possibly later than 1942. Other mercury mines subsequently discovered and developed nearby include the Cardinal, Drew, Reward, and Keg mines. The last operating mine may have been the Moser (or Mosier), named after the owner Carl Moser, which is recorded as operating "up to 1956." The structures remaining likely date to this latest and possibly last mining era of the 1940s-1950s.
