Construction of railway line between Turku and Helsinki, Rantarata ("Coastal railway"), started in 1896 and was completed three years later. However, it was designed and built for low-speed local traffic with minimum costs, so the line was very winding, because even the smallest hills and cliffs were bypassed. Some of the worst curves were straightened as early as in the 1910s, but the improvement work continued until the 1990s. This, together with basic improvements for high-speed traffic made some of the old parts obsolete. The first railway bridge over Halikko river was completed in 1899. It was partially destroyed during the civil war in 1918, but was repaired later in that year. In the 1930s a new steel bridge was built on the same foundations. It remained in use until 1993, when a new concrete element bridge was built nearby. Shortly afterwards the tracks were removed and, after local kids started climbing on the metal girders, access to the bridge blocked, though ineffectively, with metal fencing. Because of flawed design the railway line has been straightened and rebuilt through the 20th century. In 1927 a tunnel, 112 meters long, was blasted through a hill couple of kilometers west from the river. However, in the 1990s it no longer met the growing demands of modern railroad traffic, so a replacing tunnel was built nearby in 1993. After the tracks were removed the association of small farmers of Halikko erected a bandstand, covered the gravel with plywood and held "tunnel dances" in the old railroad tunnel.
