Originally it was a shortcut for commoners so they could avoid running into nobles (on horseback, hence Horse-Avoiding Alley), which involved a lot of time-consuming rituals. There have been a ton of restaurants back here. Unfortunately sections of the historic alley and the connected neighbourhood are being bulldozed block-by-block.
