Built throughout 1941-42, Queen Elizabeth High School opened in September 1942. After construction of Citadel High School nearby, this school was closed in June 2007. It served, with distinction and pride, students from Halifax as well as the national and international community. Facilities included an excellent library, art rooms, music rooms, technology education shops, science laboratories, computer laboratories, family studies rooms, a reading resource room, a learning support centre, an ESL centre, a gymnasium, an auditorium and a full service cafeteria - all of which were accessible to the physically challenged. School motto was "Facere Faciendo Discimus" which means "We Learn to Do by Doing." The rear of the school is being demolished to make way for the Emergency Room expansion of the hospital located next door.
