The mill of Toppila was built by Vaasan Höyrymylly Oy, a major flour and bread producer, around 1920. The original product was rye, but in the 1950s wheat was added to the production line and the red brick building was expanded upwards by one floor. In 1979 a large concrete mill was built next to the old one and the lot was acquired by Raisio Oy. 12 years later the old mill was obsolete and pipelines and conveyors that connected it to the newer mill were cut off. Couple of years ago the old mill was virtually intact, with all its machines still in situ. There was even electricity and the lights could be turned on. However, apartments were planned in the old mill and the demolition of the interior began somewhere after 2004. The plan has since been put to halt because of the newer, still-operating mill is too close to the old building with all its noise and dust emissions. Now it looks like the old building might be completely demolished. (Adapted from Spivey Point's text. See their site for a full tour in the old mill) The building suffered from an arson on September 14th, 2009. The fire was fortunately limited to a single room.
