Most of the former factory buildings, all designed by the famous architect Alvar Aalto, have been converted to other uses, but at least two remain abandoned and open to the elements. The storage silo is made of concrete and looks like a church from far. It's been completely sealed and for now it can not be accessed. The power station, made of brick, is open to the elements. The building has been inhabited by hundreds of pigeons that are aggressively defending their nests. Some of the machines, probably turbines, have been removed, but a large boiler still remains. Some of the floors can only be accessed by climbing since some stairs and ladders have been removed. It's difficult but possible.

Toppila Oy was founded in 1931 by Peter Dixon & Son Ltd, a family business operating a paper factory in England. The company used to produce dried sulphite pulp for the said factory in the district of Toppila in the city of Oulu. In the early 70s the production was no longer needed by the owner, so the factory was sold to Kajaani Oy in 1973. The new owner bought the outdated factory mainly because of its forest properties. When the pulp business collapsed, operating the old factory was no longer profitable, and all 320 workers were fired in 1985. Most of the building have been reused for various purposes, such as stores, apartments and such, but at least the power station and a large storage silo remain abandoned. Update (2013): The power plant is being rebuilt for other purposes. During the reconstruction, a hole was made without permission into the wall to remove the boilers.

The silo still exists without new use, but the power plant has since been repurposed for other uses.
