The carpenter Peter Rasmussen and his wife Marie emigrated to America from Norway in 1870. At one point the family (including four daughters and one son) owned over twenty acres of land in present-day Santa Clara and Campbell. Upon retirement Peter Rasmussen sold his property and in the Spring of 1902 built the house on a 3.38 acre parcel fronting what was then San Jose Avenue. The location was chosen for Los Gatos' salubrious climate which would benefit Marie's ailing health. Marie died on February 28, 1904 at age 58. One of the Rasmussen's daughters, Maria, lived in the house with her father until 1918 when the two moved to Oakland. The house was then sold to Illinois farmers William and Ninnie E. Thrash. William died from an automobile accident in 1925 leaving Ninnie with the estate. Ironically, a gas station was built next to the property three years later. In 1938 Ninnie moved to a second dwelling at 367 SJ Ave. and rented out the main house to Jeannette Henard who converted it into a rest home for the elderly. The entire property was sold to Jeannette and Joseph Henard in 1941 and the Henard Convalescent Hospital remained until Jeannette's death in 1957. The hospital was bought by the National Benevolent Association Health Services Corporation (run by rhe Disciples of Christ) in 1974. The Thrash House was turned into administrative offices for the hospital. In 1995 it was sold again to Emmanuel Convalescent Hospital who manage nursing homes in California and Nevada. A fire in 1983 destroyed the first floor, but, in 1985, the town council, based on an appeal by Planning Commissioner Kathryn Morgan, blocked demolition. A standoff ensued, with the undemolishable residence as yet unrestored.

There was talk of restoring the house in February of 1989.

Investors are planning on demolishing the abandoned convalescent hospital on the property and building twenty new houses in its place. The Thrash House is to be renovated and restored.
