In the Savoy Flats building all the floors collapsed on one side into the Lobby. Only way to the roof is by climbing the stairs next to all the debris from the collapse, stairs no longer have a side wall. Very scary !! And I can't forget the bouncy room in the newer building. A squatter kid lived there and filled a room with mattresses.

The Savoy is actually two separate buildings. The smaller building was originally The Savoy Flats. The SF was built in 1906, opened in 1909, 7 stories, 19 housekeeping apartments, 4 bachelor's apts., had a steel & conduit system for refrigeration resulting in an ice making plant in each apartment. The SF was Houston's first residential high rise and first public building to be electrified. When it was built it featured electricity, steam heat and dumbwaiters to the basement in each apartment. It went downhill over time and in the 1950s it became a boarding house. In the 1960s it was purchased by Allen Field as part of a planned office / hotel / apartment complex called the Savoy-Field. The offices were never built, but the new hotel wing was opened in 1966. The apartments in the original building closed in 1976, and the newer hotel wing closed for good in about 1988 after being used as a Best Western for a short time and then for the South Texas College of Law Students (hence the Barrister Club on the ground floor). I read that Lee Harvey Oswald is said to have stayed there in October 1963. He was in Houston to apply for a job at Continental Oil Services. I also read that JFK was in Houston before Dallas, and that he stayed at the Rice Hotel Nov. 21st '63. Very interesting !!
