November 6, 2006 the building caught fire in a 5-alarm blaze forcing around 200 nearby residents to evacuate the area. Local residents feared the building would sit vacant because of the ongoing criminal investigation regarding the fire. Tribute Communities homebuilders made a bid to purchase the property but due to unresolved issues with creditors a deal could not be finalized.
Useless Knowledge:
Between March 19 and March 21, 2005 a large quantity of stainless steel slats and hock cutters valued over $5000 was stolen at New York Pork & Food Exchange.
