 Overview
 Description
The old brick buildings have sit roofless since the fire devastated them couple of years ago. Nature has claimed back the old turbine hall and water flowing through it has formed small artificial rapids on the floor. Most of the remaining machinery has turned into rusted, twisted metal scrap, but the old art class that can be accessed every now and then still contains various bits and pieces. There's also a chalkboard that has been used as a guest book.

The buildings have suffered of vandalism especially after the art people were evicted. Most of the art installations have also been damaged.

There's an active district heating station in the building, and it might be equipped with an alarm. Some time ago the switchboard with blinking lights could be seen from the art class, but apparently the door between them has since been closed and locked.

     History
The power station on Lasaretinväylä, a branch of the river Oulujoki, was built in 1903 by the city of Oulu. Steam engine, turbines and dynamos were installed in the lower floor while the upper floor contained storage space and a small repair shop. Steam boiler was located in a separate wing building.

The power plant was expanded in 1921, 1927-1928 and 1937, when the new hydropower station was built in the northern end of the building.

After the hydropower plant of Merikoski was completed in 1954, the old power plant became obsolete and was disconnected from the grid in 1957 and most of the machinery was removed soon afterwards.

The nearby school used the old buildings for art classes until a devastating fire destroyed nearly half of the building in 2006.

For couple of years it stood roofless, abandoned to the elements, but in 2008 it was taken over by an art group called "Art Front" that used whatever they could find from the old buildings to make several art installations. The old turbine hall was also cleaned up and turned into a skate park by local skater scene. Unfortunately after couple of months the city decided to hold an open architectural contest about the redevelopement of the area, decided that it couldn't support this kind of alternative culture and evicted the people who had, among other things, kept vandals out from the buildings.

It is unknown when the oil-fired district heating station was built in the eastern end of the building. It survived the fire in 2006 and still in use. The envinronmental licence is due in 2014, but the plant might be moved to another location before that to speed up the revedelopement of the area.
     Media Coverage
Information about the architectural contest and the entries.

There's been some media coverage about the location over the years, but most of it is in Finnish. I've linked some articles with photographs.

MTV3: Suojeltu voimalaitos kärsi mittavia palovahinkoja Oulussa (about the fire)
Kaleva: Rakenna, älä riko (about the art project)
     Future Plans
There has been an architectural contest about the redevelopement of the area. The old power station is protected by law, so it will be renovated and incorporated into new buildings. This won't, however, take place until the district heating station is closed.
