A beautiful old church in a serious state of disrepair. Though Fedge and I didn't get inside, two other members of my family did get in there over the weekend and have permitted me to post pics of the interior that they took. While not an overly exciting location, it is the oldest standing church in the region at the moment. Never having had running water, its uses were limited throughout the years. More recently there have been offers by people wishing to purchase the church to live in or build a business in, however, if the zoning were to change on the property the City would appropriate about 1/2 of the land for roadway and would require the owner to move the building onto a postage stamp sized property. Sadly, the current owner of the property can't justify paying the taxes of $4000/yr on it when he can tear it down and pay a fraction of that. Sad.

Excerpt from the Kedron Church History page-- What did the inside of this church look like? It had only one room, with a wood burning stove as you entered at the south end. Stove pipes stretched along the ceiling to a chimney at the other end of the church, throwing out heat all the way. At the north end was a raised platform for the pulpit, an organ that was pumped with the feet, and seating for the choir. Pews for the congregation were arranged in three sec tions with two aisles. The middle seats had dividers in the middle. At first some of the church funds were raised by pew rentals. The rate was set at two dollars a year for the centre section and one dollar a year for the side seats. This practice was discontinued in 1881.

This site was scheduled for demolition today. As of 4:30 this afternoon (Dec 7 09) it was still standing, with no sign of a work crew anywhere nearby. For tax reasons the owner wants it down before the new year, so this church's days are numbered.
