The Alberta government purchased the Federal Building in 1983 as part of a three-way land deal with the City of Edmonton and the Government of Canada. It has been vacant since 1989.

The building was designed by prominent Edmonton architect George Heath MacDonald, who gave us, among other structures, Robertson Wesley Church, the University Hospital and the old Public Library Building. MacDonald actually began drawing plans for a five-storey west facing federal building in 1939 but the Second World War derailed that project.
