If you go, make sure your life insurance is paid up.  Security Measures  Historical Dates Built: 0 Closed: 1983  Required Equipment hard hat, life insurance  Recommended Equipment  History Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality news release 9/25/06: An environmental clean-up response at the former Lincoln Beerblower Power Plant, located at 1415 East Fountain Road, Ponca City, Oklahoma will begin September 25, 2006. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Corps of Engineers (Corps), the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Oklahoma Department of Labor (ODOL), the Oklahoma Attorney General (AG), and the Inter-Tribal Environmental Council are working together to ensure asbestos inside the former coal-fired electrical generating station is properly abated and disposed. In its current state, the asbestos presents a hazard to human health and the environment. The plant was constructed by OG&E in the 1920s and generated power by burning coal until it was decommissioned in 1983. OG&E sold the plant in 1986. In 1989, the ODOL discovered illegal asbestos removal and salvage operations were occurring at the site and shut down the operations. The building was locked down and secured to prevent trespass and exposure. Several attempts were made to cleanup the asbestos; however, financial and legal impediments prevented the cleanup. Overtime, ownership of the property changed, site security was compromised, and windows were broken to the point that asbestos, which was once contained within the building, may be released into the environment. The cleanup is expected to last five to six months. As part of the cleanup efforts, the surrounding property, including the Arkansas River will be sampled to discern whether additional contaminants are present.
