     History
The whole area was based on San Antonio, a 1600's era town whch was on the Camino Real, the old Spanish route North. In the 1800's, SA had become mostly agricultural. Then came coal.

Coal was discovered in the nearby hills, resulting in the founding of the towns of Carthage and Tokay. A rail line came next, connecting the three town with the main line from El Paso to Albuquerque. Coal was mined sporadically through the 1940's. Carthage and Tokay have largely been destroyed, in part due a "desert restoration" project run the the BLM. Little remains, but its worth seeing.

     Future Plans
Tokay is on the site of an active ranch, and is no more. Carthage is mostly gone as well. Not much more can happen.
