     History
Eastown Theatre was designed by V. J. Waier & Co. and opened in 1931 with a seating capacity of 2500. Originally, it strictly showed motion pictures with an occasional live performance. The first movie shown was Sporting Blood with Clark Gable. The movie theater closed in 1967 and was reopened in 1969 as a concert hall hosting mostly rock bands. The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead and Cream all played there. Drugs were rampant among the crowds and the Eastown was eventually ordered to be closed after several deaths and overdoses, shutting down in 1973. Renamed the Showcase Theater, it reopened in 1975 as a jazz hall. The Showcase showed adult films from 1980-1984 until the building was purchased by the Detroit Center for the Performing Arts, which put on plays with both adult and youth casts and provided acting workshops until 1990. The building hosted raves in the mid-90s until it was purchased by a church group called Deeper Life Ministries. It was put up for sale in 2004 but never purchased. A fire on August 9, 2010 leveled half the building. Damage due to scrappers caused the roof to collapse in 2014.
