It’s the place where NASCAR pioneer Speedy Thompson died. And it’s the last remaining vintage racetrack in the Charlotte, N.C., area, the epicenter of stock car racing. The Metrolina Speedway opened in 1960 as a 1/2 mile, clay surface track. It was paved for a brief time in the 1970s in order to host several NASCAR events that saw important victories for Harry Grant and Jack Ingram (in addition to Earnhardt). But the track reverted to a clay surface shortly thereafter. It hosted sprint car and motocross races until its closure in the mid 1990s. Since then, the track and the grandstand have become overgrown; the concession stand and announcer’s box have been removed, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., has taken the old “Metrolina Speedway” sign that once stood over the gate.
