Nordstrum High School was built on the site in 1915 but quickly became severely overcrowded. To relieve the problem, construction on Southwestern High School began in 1921 and the two buildings were combined. A large addition was built in 1967 that included a new gymnasium, locker rooms and swimming pool. The school closed in 2012 due to low enrollment and many items were auctioned off. By 2013, scrappers had worked their way into the building and fires were started in the auditorium and cafeteria.
