This is a 2 story single family home, that was converted into a duplex at some point in time. Attic is filled with junk still. Some interesting receipts and paperwork, but otherwise garbage.

Betty Lou was born on Dec 15, 1928. She was the 2nd born, and only daughter of 5 children. She contracted polio at the age of 5 and spent 3 years in a Milwaukee hospital recovering. She started grade school at the age of 8, attending Hopkins St School in Milwaukee. She and her parents moved to Sussex WI when she was 11. She never received any more than a grade school education. Betty Lou married a farmer's son, Reuben on Nov 6th 1948, at the age of 19. They lived on the Reuben 85 acre family dairy farm in Sussex that Reuben would eventually take over. This post shows the home of that 85 acre farm. The barn still stands, but I did not know it belonged to the home at the time - I thought the farm across the street owned. I will have to return to check it out. I also somehow missed the basement, often my favorite part of a home. Reuben eventually ran his own trucking business which grew into a national outfit, and Betty Lou ran an antiques dealership out of the barn. Betty Lou was also the director of the local food pantry from 1980-91. The 85 acres of land was leased to a local farmer who worked the land. I cannot find the year, but at some point prior to 2000 they sold 73 acres of land to a local developer who created an industrial park, with the first big business being WOW, a major local beer distributor. Also at some point, their home was converted into a duplex as the main staircase in the 1st floor living room was dry walled over creating a second private entrance. It is unclear who rented the upstairs. In 2000, her husband of 53yrs, Reuben passed away. The very next day she found had they won an auction to buy a historical downtown Sussex home that was in foreclosure. She moved her antique dealership into the downtown home, built in 1917. Sometime in 2004-05, she sold her final 12 acres to the industrial park and moved into her downtown home. Her sold property included the barn and neighboring home (that home I posted earlier: https://www.uer.ca...urrpage=1&pp#post0 ). This explains why there are no for sale signs on either property here. They will continue to decay until the developer razes them and expands the industrial park. After 45yrs as an antiques dealer, Betty Lou partially retired in 2005 and spent the next 9yrs selling off her leftovers. By 2014, in her mid-80's, she was having trouble climbing the stair due to post-polio syndrome. She moved into a brand new condo in the fall of 2014. The city bought her historic home/former antique shop as part of a development that included a new YMCA and an expanded city hall. I have not looked into this portion, but I can only assume it was razed. Betty Lou continues to live in her condo today. She will be 90 this December. Based on some evidence around the home, I wonder if the industrial park developer rented at least Betty Lou's house. Or I know Betty Lou has at least one son, who lives in Ixonia WI today - perhaps he lived there. I find it hard to believe that Betty Lou painted the sign in the last picture. I also don't think the fishing trinkets were hers, but I suppose they could have been her husband's. The abandoned attempt to clean a mess upstairs also looks like it could have been a renter. Why clean it up, if the intent is to eventually raze the home?

This is now commercial property so the home will never be occupied again. It will likely continue to rot until the city orders it razed, or the neighboring industrial park is expanded.
