     History
Steel mills on the site date back to 1919. At the peak of operation, Shougang Steel, also known as Capital Iron and Steel, was a massive complex of blast furnaces and related polluting industries on the edge of Beijing. The steel plant was closed prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and replaced by factories elsewhere in China. From 2008 to 2019 the area was slowly decommissioned, demolished, and repurposed. The location is now a blast furnace museum and site of a 2022 Winter Olympic stadium.
