The Saskatchewan Government constructed Valley View Center in 1952. The $8 million institution opened in 1955 as a training school for people with intellectual disabilities. It consisted of ~30 buildings on 200 hectares (495 acres) of land a few KMs south of Moose Jaw SK, and employed quit a few folks from there. 57 years later, in 2012 the province announced that Valley View would be closing its doors and placing its 1500 residents in better care homes. A lot has been discovered about mental health since 1955, and the general consensus was that its patients could receive a higher standard of care in a group home of sorts, rather than a building that mostly resembled a prison. Back in the day it boasted swimming pools, bowling alleys, and a movie theater. Essentially “a city inside of a building.” Now, most of the hallways inside give a cold and haunting vibe, and all of the entertainment has long since been demolished. Anyways, it took 7 years to house the residents, and officially close the facility. This lengthy process annoyed taxpayers as there were more administration staff on payroll than actual residents towards 2017. Eventually Valley View Center closed in Dec. of 2019. The land and its remaining buildings were sold in 2020. These photos were taken during the closing process, so it wasn’t abandoned per se, as all utilities were still operational. I only had about 1 hour to run around and capture what I could, as at the time, the complex had an uncertain future and I wanted to grab whatever shots I could in the event the whole place was to be truly abandoned. Photos taken on a rainy August day in 2019. Enjoy!
