Location DB > United States > California > Berkeley > Bevalac Synchrotron > 19 MeV LINAC

Gallery Description
As with all synchrotrons, the Bevatron (the original name for the Bevalac) used a LINAC (linear accelerator) to accelerate a stream of particles to near-relativistic energies. As originally built, the Bevatron used a 10 MeV (MeV = million electron volt) Alvarez LINAC to provide a stream of accelerated protons to the synchrotron.

In 1963, as part of a series of improvements to increase the capabilities of the Bevatron, a new LINAC was built. A 480 kv Cockcroft-Walton ion gun provides protons to a 19 MeV strong-focusing Drift Tube LINAC. Accelerated protons from the LINAC are injected into the synchrotron ring.

In 1974, with the coupling of the SuperHILAC to the Bevatron, the 19 MeV LINAC was no longer needed. It is currently being dismantled along with the rest of the Bevalac. I’ve seen some equipment tagged for transfer to Brookhaven National Laboratory, but I don’t know if that’s still planned (BNL operated a 50 MeV LINAC as an injector for their Alternating Gradient Synchrotron until 1970).
