Article reads: The old section of the Toronto Jail was finally closed forever on December 31, 1977. In the 115 years since the building was first used as a modern prison, more than one million prisoners have been held in it. Over the years, the inside of the jail has been altered many times in attempts to increase its capacity or make it more secure or more stable, depending on the needs and philosophy of the times; very little remains of the original architecture. The photographs on these pages are reproduced because almost every staff member in the Ministry has probably wondered at one time or another what the interior of the "Don" was really like. The jail was never extensively photographed because of the difficulties of overcrowding and so most of the photos here were taken in December / January 1977/1978.
