Location DB > United States > Florida > Miami > Chekika > November 2009 Gallery Description I took a walk in the park today and took some photos. Sorry, camera phone... pleh. It was a beautiful day. During my visit I did find one of the old campsites in use; an RV is on site, and a park ranger is living there. As I was walking out of the park, he came over and (very politely!) informed me the park was closed... and to come back after December 1! The park will be open to the public Dec. 1 through Apr. 30. Why it's still going to be open is kind of a mystery. The park appears to have no facilities, not even restrooms. Strange... The campground area of the park and the park's restrooms were closed after the sewage treatment facility was destroyed by a hurricane. I forget if this was Andrew or a later storm... The old artificial lake is dry, and the pumphouse which once supplied it with water appears to have been removed. There's nothing where I remember the pumphouse once standing. The artificial lake is dry. The lake it drained into (borrow pit?) is still filled with water. At some point after Andrew, the old sluice between the two was replaced with a culvert, which allowed the artificial lake to drain much faster once the water supply was cut off. I recall finding the artificial lake, which was once a swimming hole, empty on a few occasions while the park was open. Very strange... On the way back from here, I went south down the road from the park, and found some other potential sites for later investigation. Interestingly, I also found that the road north of the park, which once accessed an old site known as "Hole In The Wall", believed to be the remains of some old Cuban Missile Crisis facility, is now closed off with a very new gate and U.S. Government property signs!
