Yikes. I don't think we ever had such a beautiful automobile in the states.

The states missed out on a lot of cool volvos.

No 400 series (You didn't get Volvo's cool Digital sports car with pop up lights, the 480Turbo) no 300 series and a lot of volvos (The 900 springs to mind) were a lot better equipped and had nicer suspension in the UK.

We also had diesel variants of most cars.

You DID get a bunch of Turbo volvos we didn't though, like the 240GLT-Turbo coupe and Wagon (Estate).

Didn't we get a turbo version of the 200-series?? Shameful.

Nah, the B23FT engine was never fitted to 240's over here. The most powerfull 200 we got was the 260GLT - and that PVR engine sucked - the oilways were too small and they ended dying an unlubricated death.

Much like my ex.

My mom had volvo fever for a while. Started with a "silver bullet" 88 240, then moved into a mid 90's 940. I always thought the 740(i think) Turbos were pretty sporty...for a volvo. Not a fan of their recent "non boxy" cars though.

Happy to say we've never, ever had a Volvo in the family.

Well the recent Volvos are all just fords anyways. The s80 and s60 are based on the Mondeo (Taurus) chassis.

The 480 was a truly sporty volvo - designed from the ground up to be such. I loved mine, for all its faults!

The S60 and S80 are actually based on unique platforms, which is why they're so awkward to adapt Ford engines to (there are no Ford engines in the S60/80 line-ups), and I think the S80 was using a 4-speed GM automatic transmission until recently. Not very Ford. The new S40 however is just a glorified Focus.

I've noticed little things from Ford creeping in: switchgear, door handles, boot liner - that kinda thing. Jaguar are saving money doing the same thing!

I drove an S80 for a while, the Mark1 did indeed share its floorpanel (and five other panels?) with the Mondeo and Passat common platform.

I love Volvos normally, but I didn't like the S80 much :-(

I also had a go of the C70, it was fast and looked the part of a sports car; Didn't handle for shit though, felt unstable near the edge of the envelope - I would take my old 480 over the C70 any day.

Maybe I got a bad example, but a few people I talked to about it (Including its owner) agreed it wasn't upto much through bends and twisty turns.
