Sure it's electric? I see a gas line at left.

Yeah that's a gas fire - there's no elements for it to be a 'leccy fire.

So observant! Looks a lot like electric heating elements though.

The wires are there just to prevent any broken stones from falling against the glass and breaking it.

The wires on the fire?! They're there to stop you putting your hand/an object into the flame!

When I was a very very young boy (like 1 or 2) I thought that when the gas fire went out it was cold again and I touched that metal frame... was sore! :)

Ghehehe.
I had a gas fire in my room where you didn't see the flames except for trough a tiny peephole.
I used to switch is so low that there were just no flames but every two seconds you'd hear "zwoooooiii" and a flame roved all the tubes.
I once forgot about it and then I heard *bwoam* and flames came from under the thing. I never told my parents and I allways put it on proper.

IIVQ, you're one damned lucky dude! I've seen the effects of a gas explosion years ago and all I can say is, "You're one damned lucky dude!"

You are looking at ceramic heat deflectors. The gas pumps into them, ignites and heats several 'nipple' looking lumps of ceramic inside: which deflects the heat outwards.
No glass: that would be silly.
