Lath is the word used to describe real plaster walls, made of plaster over little wooden slats. Because it seeps between the slats, it holds securely and doesn't buckle when you grab your buddy by the collar and slam him into the wall like Sheetrock does. Sheetrock is like thick fibreboard with a very thin layer of plaster over it and is about as strong as paper nailed to a wall could be expected to be. If you check where studs are carefully enough, you could punch through it easily, but don't try it in a wall made of lath.
