the victoria bridge was originally a tube, square over half its length and round over the rest, it was later turned into regular through trusses like this

I'm guessing the ole Prince of Wales didn't dig the original design much, having been nearly choked to death during the official opening ceremonies.

Even more major modifications to the south end of this bridge took place when the Seaway came through.

not only the south end but in the middle span 15 i think was removed to allow for the embrachement that supports the auxilliary bridge, one thing to note, the auxilliary lift bridge, the main one doesnt have this feature) has 2 lift spans, the span just south of the main lift tower is actually a moveable span, rendered inoperable by the absence of lift equipment and a south tower. they did this as the expected to double all the seaway locks eventually, traffic never warranted such a thing, that is why all the entrance areas to the locks split, one side leading to the lock the other to a pile of gravel, for the lock that was never built

My great great...great (not sure how many) grandfather designed the supports for this bridge, his name is carved into one of the supports (if the ice hasn't eroded it awa).
