Yeah, my friends and I all looked for the "Abyss", the rumored cave at red rocks with no such luck. It was still alot of fun to explore though, nice pictures.

If you go all the way up to the top of the main cave (to the left if you're facing the stage in the amphitheater) there is a stairway carved into the rock that goes out to the very tip of the rock.
Oh, and by the way, don't get caught climbing the rocks. I believe it's a $1000 fine or something moronic and the park rangers are very upity about it!
By the way, nice photos!!!

yeah, im a little sketched out about that cave, its pretty high and you have to shimmy on that tiny ledge for a long way. Also do you know if there is any truth this "the stairway was carved out by a man that commited suicide"?

From what I understand the stairway was originally just to take tourist out to the point of the rock. I have seen old pictires with 20 -30 people up there which is kind of amazing concidering the climb to get up to the stairway. The last time I was up there was probably 30 years ago. I have heard of distraught lovers jumping to their death from up there but nothing about a suicide by the guy who carved the stairway. I did watch a guy fall out of the main cave down into the amphitheater at a concert up there back in about '77. He was pretty dead when he landed. It's a long way down.

Way back when, I ascended this path with some friends... in the dark... while it was snowing...

I'll never, ever do that again.

This place looks intense, too bad we don't have things like this in Nova Scotia.

Its really not too bad, the worst part is running up the hill and out of site from the main road. The hog backs (what this formation of rocks is called) is fairly unique to Colorado.
