  How fast did these belts move? Of course I imagine a belt going real fast but it'd be impossible to read the sign or get a good grip.

  I imagine that they moved slowly. I think that there was a rope to pull for emergency stops. Maybe in some operating mills, the man lifts still are running. But we cannot see those....

  yeah these are still in place in a lot of mills, you can't put a new one in but you can maintain the ones that exist. they move pretty slow. You're right about the rope. They also have a few other safetys in place, but they've probably caused more serious injuries/deaths than about anything else in this type of plant.
