  you have to really admire the whole concept of trains. My fascination is with the track itself - how on earth can those thin rails with those little spikes through some metal plates into wooden ties actually hold up such enourmous weight? The engineering genius is that the tracks don't blow apart when a train goes over them.

  exactly, in the 70s during the penn central debacle one of the big things was parked derailments, when the ties would rot to the point parked trains would derail!
