A 1920 aerial view of Iroquois, Ontario and the downstream end of the Galop Canal. This view is looking west (upriver) with New York at top left. Serious changes took place in this area with the development of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the last half of the 1950s: 1) A massive hunk of Point Rockway (top left) was removed to regulate the flow of the St. Lawrence 2) A 2500 foot long dam was built between Iroquois Island (top center) and the American shore of the river. 3) A 27 foot deep navigation channel was dug through the island. 4) A set of locks was installed to allow ships to navigate around the dam. 5) The entire town of Iroquois (save for one or two historic buildings) was relocated north of the train tracks seen at bottom right. This part of the canal is now home to the Iroquois municipal marina. A park and a small airstrip now occupy the former town site. Photo credit: McCarthy Aero Services Ltd. Source: ArchiviaNet
