Why would there be a boiler water level control (the black spherical thing with the switch on top) on a forced air furnace?

instead of heating water and circulating through pipes/radiators, a forced air furnace heats air and blows it through ducts in the floors and walls. In relation to hot water, the forced air is pretty inefficient.
