there is the very same structure outside of Elizabethtown NY... the State of NY highway department uses it to store salt for the roads (they are charged with a section of I-87 as well NY Route 9/9N and Route 22.

We use the exact same structures (even down to the colour of the tiles on it) in Scotland too.

Theories: Dome shape allows for no internal support structures. (more storage) Shape conforms to the natural shape that a pile of dirt wants to be anyway.

the ones on the side of the seaway for salt have doors in the roof. The self unloaders pull right up and dump through the nipple
