  had the same problem in my own home over the summer... had a monsoon early on, just rained for days... occured to me that I hadn't heard the sump kick on in a long while... opened up the cellar door and things were floating in the basement... plugged the sump back in and the thing pumped water for almost 3 hours solid.

  And I bet the first words out of your mouth were "Oh f--k!"

I know those were the first ones out of mine!

Got the pump working (float switch was faulty) and we were amazed at how the water was pouring into the pit from the tiles like a fire hose. Took about the same amount of time until the water flow finally slowed back down to a trickle.
