What about my right to smoke weed? Actually UP no longer allows smoking of cigarettes on any company property, and I believe the rules on drinking are very strict for train crews, if they're allowed to at all. Being on call all the time doesn't give you much freedom.

Unfortunately some rail crews succumb to addiction, its the same with any high stress job (airline pilots).

from what the guys on the CP Rail switch crew tells me, they are on call 24/7/365 (unless on vacation). The pager goes off, they go. Seems like a rugged way to live... I imagine train crews get paid $$$!

I once applied for UP but I was sick that day and couldn't pass the physical test, specifically the handgrip part. I still think about working for a RR but my life is too good to deal with being oncall like that. Believe they said the divorce rate is higher than any other profession.
