The earthwork in the foreground is the embankment for the tracks now leading out of Ottawa Station. The tracks with the approaching train belonged to CN. Part of the train is crossing the Rideau River bridge. To the right is the old CP bridge across the river, which is now a pedestrian bridge. Behind it the light standards for the Queensway are visible. At this time the Queensway started at Nicholas Street and ran to Blair Road. Because of the active railway lines the section through downtown was not completed until 1967. To the left and out of the picture is where the Hurdman transit station now resides. To the left of the train is Rideau Campus, still EOIT at the time. The twin poles in the right stand of the picture are still there today. Behind them is now the transitway, and right of them is the RMOC water pumping station. At the time the NCC was in such a hurry to build the new railway embankment that they didn't allow CP to remove the railway crossing at the lower right. The tracks were built up to either side of the gap which was quickly filled in the day the new Ottawa station opened, and the old one closed (July 1, 1966).
