Since there's no caption for this photograph... In mid-90s the ruined sawmill and power station, smoke stack and workers' barracks were still intact. I personally saw them, thanks to my dad who brought me there to see them. A glimpse of the ruined power station behind the trees, its smoke stack rising above the treetops and the barracks, which were, back then, the biggest abandoned houses I had ever seen. I climbed up the hill and saw "Access forbidden" and "Look out for falling objects"-signs in the wall of the barracks. Then I saw that another one of the buildings was being demolished. Later I also saw two smoke stacks in the forest, with stoves hanging in the air. In late-90s everything but the house factory was completely demolished. I forgot everything about the sawmill for several years, and when I saw news about the redevelopement of the old sawmill area of Vartsala in our local newspaper, I decided to take a look before it's too late. Now, after couple of years, the place still remains almost in the same condition as when I visited it for first time. The contaminated soil around the house factory has now been cleaned and new houses are being built in the area.

What sort of pollution would a sawmill produce?

Most Finnish sawmills used KY5 wood preservative, which contained 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol. It's a nasty chemical that must be removed before the area can be redeveloped.
