Were the sides and top made of solid wood or just cheap stuff like the back?

I don't know--we didn't examine them closely. And she sure didn't put those holes in them.

The backside is usually made of plywood because it's cheaper and more practical. Think about moving a shelf that weights 20 or 30 kilograms more than it does with a backside made of plywood and costs twice as much? Handling and producing such large wood panels is also quite difficult, since you'll need a large planer (I bet the prices of such machines skyrocket when you go, say, past one meter in width), large rail clamps and so on. Anyway, I've always used plywood in the backside because it's usually against the wall where it can not be seen.
